Ugandan Children to meet crazy Asian-American Med Student

My name is Michelle Chin. I am recent medical school graduate from Temple University School of Medicine. I am planning a trip to Uganda April 2008 with the Global Volunteers Network in cooperation with The Real Uganda.

I am planning on working with children in several villages in Uganda providing healthcare, education, and support. Many of the children have been affected by HIV, poverty, and/or violence. According to the CDC, an estimated 1,000,000 children have been orphaned by AIDS. All the children of the region have little support and supplies for their education.

As a future pediatrician I hope to not only learn from this experience, but make a significant impact on the lives of many of these children in this part of East Africa. A summary of some of the programs that The Real Uganda provides is listed below.

"Sponsored Children: VOLSET currently sponsors the school fees of over 70 orphans and vulnerable children. Over 20 of the children/teenagers we sponsor live in a dorm on VOLSET premises. Volunteers can help with visiting children at their schools, weekly life-skills lessons with children in the dorm, and various other activities.

Teaching at Schools: VOLSET volunteers are often guest speakers at local primary & secondary schools on the topics of HIV/AIDS, malaria, life skills, English lessons, etc.

Children's Camps: For volunteers who come when school is not in session we are looking for interested volunteers to run a empowerment day camp with lessons and games about communication, assertiveness, decision-making, relationships, etc."

To make this trip most successful, I am asking for donations of any kind to further the education and lives of these children who have very little (no electricity or running water). You would make an huge difference in the lives of many of the children in the Mukuno district.

Please feel free to contact me for further information and questions. Thank you very much for your support and consideration,

Michelle A. Chin, M.D.
